Honoring Our Ancestors

In these offerings of images and teachings we honor our Dance lineage and ancestors Murshid Samuel L. Lewis (Father of the Dances), Hazrat Inayat Khan (Grandfather of the Dances), and Ruth St. Denis (Grandmother of the Dances).

Murshid Samuel Lewis

The originator of the Dances of Universal Peace was Murshid Samuel Lewis. A life-long seeker, he studied and mastered many spiritual paths, and was the first American-born Sufi master. Committed to world peace and understanding through face-to-face meetings of people of different cultures, and exchanges in the arts and agriculture, he was a "citizen diplomat" long before the phrase was invented. "Eat, Dance and Pray Together" was his peace plan. In his writings and teaching talks, he especially credits two of his teachers, Hazrat Inayat Khan and Ruth St. Denis, for their influence on him as the Dances began to "come to and through" him.
